Full Moon and New Moon Planning

How To Calculate the Time of a Full Moon

Do you want to summit Kilimanjaro during the full moon? On "summit day" our final ascent to the top begins around midnight and we reach the crater rim at sunrise, so you will want this night climb to be during a full moon.

"Technically speaking, the Full moon only lasts for about a second or so. This distinction cannot be seen with the naked eye though. Without the aid of a telescope, it is hard for humans to distinguish between a moon that is 100% illuminated and a moon that is 99.9% illuminated. So while the Moon may only be 100% full for about one minute, it looks “full” for about three days." (moonphases.info)

Here is how to plan a full-moon ascent:

First, identify the exact moment of full moons during the year:

http://www.moongiant.com/Full_Moon_New_Moon_Calendar.php

Then convert UTC (GMT) time to Tanzania time by adding three hours:

UTC = https://time.is/UTC

TZ = https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/tanzania/dar-es-salaam

This is the exact moment of the full moon over Kilimanjaro. You may wish pick your summit climb as close to that moment as possible, but in reality, you will enjoy a full moonlight experience for a period of a day or two before and after.
